I Want You

This was the first piece created in this series. When the melody and the chorus fall together and Bob repeatedly sings “I want you” I can’t help but feel as though the more he says it, the less likely it is for it to happen. This tension created the exploding heart as a means to deal with wanting something so badly and never being able to have it.

Skinny Love

These photos were taken on a trip to California in January of 2010. It was funny to me coming from the snowy midwest that even though it was 75 degrees people were not out enjoying the beach. The lyrics, “Pour a little salt, we were never here,” seemed to resonate well with these photos of empty swingsets on the beach as if whoever was here, never really was.

High for This

Even though you don’t roll…
Typographic inspiration was borrowed from the game Ker-plunk and the visual is a reflection of my ever growing interest in tattoos. Reminiscent of some early Ed Hardy work.

Heartbreaker

I admit that it was the sadness and sincerity that stuck with me after listening to this song again and again. Loving someone and saying goodbye or having it end feels like the end of the world and can be somewhat paralyzing. Lazily setting text in Gotham caps and filling in the counters with some bright colors to beg for a glimmer of hope seemed just right.

Someone Great

This visual was created from a memory of when I was a teenager. The bouncing sound of keys echoing my heartbeat as I lay on the shag carpeting of my bedroom floor.

Good Times

A few weeks after my birthday I stumbled upon this video featuring Kevin Durant for Nike Basketball that aired during the NBA lockout. The song brought me back a few weeks earlier when I was blowing out the candles on my birthday cake through drunken eyes with all of my best friends. The most celebratory lyrics have been typeset via early 90s Nike and the cake image has been run through the Delauney Raster to help share my visual experience. Happiness is simple.

Untitled

< & 3 make a heart. Why not make a <3 out of <3′s? The dwindling, monotonous guitar drove the visual.

The Reeling

Playing off of the Someone Great visual I was reminded that out of fear and sadness comes a sense of confidence and self identification. Something powerful born out of a dark place. I decided to created this storm of color with the eye of the storm being the letter O and the text ‘Here I Am’ bursting out of space that rise seems to explode on the last break of the song.

Skin and Bones

This piece was originally created as a valentine inspired by Rick Valicenti and later I realized that subconsciously a particular lyric in this song had given birth to this piece. “Heart of hearts, a valentine.” The visual seems much happier than I had intended.

Living Proof

It was here that the logo for this project was born. With the obvious intent to create a heart that represents an anchor, I thought it appropriate to go a little deeper and derive inspiration from Jasper Johns’ Three Flags. Later this was simplified and was tattooed on the inside of my arm remembering that I wear my heart on my sleeve, but not so all can see it.

The song itself is very colorful and atmospheric even though the lyrics ring of desperation and anxiousness.

Guess I’m Doing Fine

This series was missing something dumb. So I did something dumb and used Live Trace from Adobe Illustrator. Feeling sorry for yourself can be stupid because its easy… kind of like using Live Trace. Even inside a mismatched house with a black facade the sun can still shine and the grass can still grow.

Love Game

I had to have a really catchy pop song in the mix. For whatever reason I could not get the idea of those colored candy dots that come on the strips of paper out of my head. It started with a matrix of dots and lines and later psychedelic game pieces were added to create a game of love.
